Gender-Predicting Old Wives' Tales

We are pretty confident that this baby is a girl, especially since I ask the doctor to check during almost every sonogram.  I still thought it would be fun to look at all the old wives tales regarding gender, so here goes...

  • If you carry high, it's a BOY; if you carry low, it's a GIRL - I think I have been carrying low this entire time, so this one is WRONG
  • If baby's heartbeat is under 140, it's a BOY; heartbeat over 140, it's a GIRL - Baby's heartbeat was almost always over 140, so this one is RIGHT
  • If you crave salt and sour, it's a BOY; if you crave sweet, it's a GIRL - I craved both sweet and sour, so this one is no help at all
  • If you suffer from morning sickness you're having a GIRL - Considering I had hyperemesis and couldn't get out of bed for 2 months, I'd say this one is spot on!
  • If you sleep on your left side, it's a BOY; if you sleep on your right side, it's a GIRL - They tell you to sleep on your left side while pregnant, so this is what I tried to do.  Usually I ended up sleeping on my back or stomach (bad, I know) so I don't think this one works for me either.
  • If you are clumsy, it's a BOY; if you are graceful, it's a GIRL - I run into walls, make noises when I get off the couch or floor, and drop things all the time (today I kept dropping things in to the trash while I was working, UGH).  This one is wrong, but I would like to know what pregnant woman is more graceful.
  • If your partner pack on the sympathy pounds you're having a GIRL - John definitely did not gain any weight, so this one is WRONG
  • Finally, according to the Chinese Gender Predictor we are having a GIRL...I think.  I am not really sure exactly what month she was conceived because it was on the cusp of 2 months, so according to my best guess (and math) it's a GIRL
According to the Old Wives' Tales, we're having a half boy, half girl baby!

Baby Girl's Coming Home Outfit

I am finally able to cross something off my to-do list before Baby Girl arrives!  Her coming home outfit is all ready, which means I have completed exactly one task.  I knew I wanted something comfortable and not too frilly, and after spending hours searching the internet I finally found the perfect outfit (AND it was on sale)!  My mom came to visit last weekend and we found the little bunny hat and slippers to finish it off.  My dad called me bunny when I was little, because of my floppy pigtails, so I am happy I was able to subtly incorporate something sentimental into her outfit.  If I get around to it, I want to add a little pink bow to the bunny hat.

Red Hot Bridal Shower

My friend Angela is getting married!  She is a hot redhead so we decided to throw her a "Red Hot" Bridal/Lingerie Shower.

Most of my chalkboards are borrowed from Pinterest so I cannot take credit for this at all.

For drinks we served Blood Orange Mimosas and Sparkling Lemonade

We served yummy brunch food and cupcakes, of course

I never liked carnations until I realized how adorable they look in mason jars.  The A & C were purchased at the craft store and then spray painted.  Mason jars also make cute (and cheap) glasses.  The straws are from my Etsy Shop (I don't have these exact ones listed, but I take custom orders).  Do you see a theme with mason jars?  I spiced up the utensils with some gold glitter bow hair ties from my shop.

Angela and Chad had the most amazing engagement photos taken so I printed out my favorites and turned them into a cute garland for the fireplace.

The groom is a great actor so we named the lingerie after different Broadway shows.  It was so much fun and way better than naming them after hookers like we did at my bridal shower!

And of course the hostesses

Glitter Chevron Canvas Tutorial

Two of my favorite things are glitter and chevron so I was very excited to throw a pink and grey chevron themed baby shower.  I knew I wanted something dramatic for over the fireplace and decided I was going to make a giant glitter chevron canvas.  I found several tutorials on Pinterest, but ultimately I combined a few different ideas to make this project work for me.  I'm not going to lie, this project is very intimidating, but with a little patience it is totally worth it.

I started with a 30x40 canvas.  I wanted my chevron to be even and symmetrical (I have a weird thing with symmetry) so I used 5 inches as my measurement since the length and width of the canvas are both divisible by 5.  If I have already lost you I suggest you buy the exact same size canvas and copy me.

I started off by marking off every 5 inches along all 4 edges with a small pencil mark.  At first I was afraid to make the marks, but they are super tiny and nobody will ever even notice.  Next, I attached strips of ribbon at each mark from the top to the bottom.  Make sure to pull tight.

Repeat the same step attaching the ribbon width-wise across the canvas, starting at the top (my photo is obvi not at the top, but you get the idea).  Make a small pencil mark at each intersection.  Repeat this step at every 5 inch mark, working your way down the entire canvas.  You are basically making a giant dot grid.

Next you are going to play a little game of connect the dots with tape.

To get straight lines on the tape I used a rotary cutter on my cutting mat.  Easy Peasy!

Now it's time for glitter!  I bought the chunky glitter from the kids craft aisle at Hobby Lobby.  I was a little nervous it was going to look cheap, but it turned out perfect!  Start by applying a thick layer of Mod Podge with a foam brush, working one section at a time.  Generously apply glitter.  As you can see from the photos, I had to do this entire project inside the house because it was raining outside.  If you can, I would recommend getting your glitter on outside!  I vacuumed for days trying to clean up the glitter!

Next is the hardest past.  Be PATIENT!  Allow plenty of time for the canvas to dry.  Once it it dry shake off the extra glitter and remove the tape.

Finally, enjoy your masterpiece!

Pink & Grey Chevron Baby Shower

My friend Jessica is pregnant with her first baby!  I was honored to host her baby shower, along with Ashley & Kerri.  Jessica is having a little girl so the theme of the shower was pink and grey chevron.

Oh course I found an excuse to use the chalkboard.  I dressed it up the a pink and silver glitter pinwheel

Baby Girl Wreath - Ashley and I whipped this little cutie up the night before the shower.  Pretty good for last minute planning!

Butterfly mobile - Instead of attaching it to a ring I tied each string directly onto the chandelier

DIY Glitter chevron artwork.  It turned out amazing.  Tutorial here!

I went a little crazy with the glitter and started covering EVERYTHING in sparkles, including my husband

Jessica is a true fashionista so we setup a headband decorating station for each guest to create a headband for the baby.  She is going to be one stylish infant!

The popcorn bar was a hit!

Instead of my signature mustache straw, I made these heart straws.  I love them so much so I decided to add them to my Etsy shop
